Bears Week 6 Recap

Bears Week 6 Recap
Ryan Swartzendruber- contributor

Everyone has that one girl (or boy). That girl that seems great at first- she’s beautiful, funny, smart, everything you wanted. But then she starts treating you like shit. Doing some things you know you shouldn’t forgive. You try to tell her to get lost but she keeps coming back to you, and you keep letting her. You just can’t cut her off.

This Bears’ season seems to be just like that girl. They went into camp with an insanely talented offense, with an alleged offensive-wizard for a coach, and a revamped defense. On paper, they looked great. But then they did things that seemed unforgivable. An opening game loss to a sub-par team, getting blown out by the Packers at home, and blowing a 14 point lead. I wanted to be done with this Bears season, I wanted to dump it and tell it not to come back. But I keep letting it back in because of days like today.

The Bears went out and won another big road game, one they desperately needed.  Matt Forte set the tone today. He only accumulated 80 yards on the ground, but he ran for two touchdowns, one of which on a particularly gutsy play call on third and goal from the nine. He also added 77 receiving yards. Forte’s play opened up the passing game and Jay certainly took advantage. In his best statistical game of the season Jay was efficient, aggressive when able, and most importantly avoided the infamous Jay Cutler bonehead throw. Marshall finally looked healthy, and Jeffrey added a few huge plays.

Going in to this game it seemed as if things could get very, very ugly for the Bears defensively. With the top FOUR! of their starting linebackers out for the game, the D really needed some guys to step up. The back-up linebacking crew played well and they were getting to ball quickly (a refreshing site after watching old and slow Lance Briggs the first five games). Khaseem Greene looked particularly impressive leading the team with eight tackles.

I think having Jeremiah Ratliff back in the lineup is huge for the Bears defense moving forward. He and Paea were cogs in the middle limiting the run game, and he really opened things up for the rest of the D-line in the pass rush. Willie Young continues to show he could be Emery’s best offseason signing, and Allen was finally very effective with a sack and a few key hurries. Oh and by the way, how fun is Kyle Fuller? Kid just makes plays and he is not afraid of contact.

The defense really stepped up today and was able to hinder a high-powered Atlanta offense. The Bears were finally able to put together a full game offensively and utilized all of their big weapons and even their lesser known guys, Josh Morgan had a touchdown in the first half and Kadeem Carey continues to look good even if it isn’t showing up in the stats.

These Bears still aren’t a big threat to win the NFC yet, but at least they are starting to look better and make strides. They won a must-win game on the road, essentially keeping the season alive and staying in the division hunt.

Just like the girl we have all dealt with, I was ready to say goodbye to this season. It’s already caused me too much pain, too much heartbreak. But then, just like the girl, the Bears came out and showed flashes of how good they can be, and how happy they can make me, just enough to convince me to let them hang around.

P.S.

In our first official HR move here at WhatSupTho I would like to officially offer Chris Conte a job as our Bears correspondent. Dude has been concussed at least 1,000 times in his career already and this year he apparently can’t make a hit without his shoulder falling out. Hang the cleats up, Chris, leave the lucrative NFL and please be our first ever unpaid Intern. Think about your health.
